Anatomy 2 - Ear Flashcards
Anatomical divisions of the ear?
External ear Middle ear Inner ear
Functional divisions of the ear?
Hearing (auditory system) Balance (vestibular system)
What skull bone are all parts of the ear located in?
Temporal bone
Name of the region where the frontal, parietal, temporal and sphenoid bones join together?
Pterion
What is an important fact about the pterion?
It is the thinnest part of the skull
Shape of the suture in the pterion?
H-shaped
What cranial nerves pass through the temporal bone?
Facial (CN VII) Vestibulocochlear (CN VIII)
Part of the temporal bone which can be seen from the lateral side? (6)
Squamous part Petrous part External acoustic meatus Mastoid process Styloid process Zygomatic process
What features of the temporal bone can you only see from the inferior surface? (3)
Mandibular fossa Stylomastoid foramen Extra cranial opening into carotid canal
What foramen are located in the temporal bone and what surfaces of the skull can they be seen from? (5)
Stylomastoid foramen (inferior base) Carotid canal (inferior base) Internal acoustic meatus (superior base) Jugular foramen (both superior and inferior base) External acoustic meatus (lateral)
What passes through the stylomastoid foramen?
Facial nerve Stylomastoid artery
What passes through the carotid canal?
internal carotid artery
What CNs pass through the anterior cranial fossa?
CNs I
What CNs pass through the middle cranial fossa?
CNs II -> VI
What CNs pass through the posterior cranial fossa?
CNs VII -> XII
What passes through the internal acoustic meatus?
CN VII (facial nerve) CN VIII (vestibulocochlear nerve) Labyrinthine artery (+ vein)
What is the Labyrinthine artery a branch from?
Anterior inferior cerebellar artery From circle of willis
Where is the external ear located?
Auricle to tympanic membrane via external acoustic meatus
Where is the middle ear located?
Tympanic membrane to oval window + eustachian tube
Where is the internal ear located?
Oval window to internal acoustic meatus
What is the purpose of the external ear?
Collects and conveys sound waves to tympanic membrane
What is the purpose of the middle ear?
Amplifies and conducts sound waves to the internal ear
What is the purpose of the internal ear?
Converts special sensory information into fluid waves -> APs -> conducts APs to brain
What makes up the skeleton of the external ear?
Temporal bone Elastic cartilage
How does the skeleton of the external ear gain nutrition?
From the skin (as it is avascular)
What is the ear canal composed of?
1/3 cartilage, 2/3 bone and lined with skin
How does the ear canal produce ear wax?
via ceruminous glands
What part of the temporal bone is the ear located in?
Petrous part
What is the name for the part of the external ear that is visible and resides outwith the head?
Auricle (pinna)
Name of the top rounded part of the ear?
Helix
Name of the part of the ear below the helix?
Anti-helix
Name of the part of the ear anterior to the anti-helix?
Conchae
Name of the part of the ear superio-anterior to the ear lobe?
Tragus
Name of the part lateral and superior to the ear lobe?
Anti-tragus
What nerve supplies the orange part?
C2, 3 spinal nerves
What nerve supplies the purple part?
C2, 3 spinal nerves
What nerve supplies the yellow part?
CN VII (facial nerve)
What nerve supplies the green part? (and the majority of the tympanic membrane)
CN V3
What nerve supplies the blue part? (and the inferior 3rd of the tympanic membrane)
CN X
What lymph nodes does the anterior part of the superior ear drain to?
Parotid lymph nodes
What lymph nodes does the psoterior surface of the superior half of the ear drain to?
Mastoid lymph nodes (and deep cervical)
What lymph nodes does the inferior part of the auricle drain to?
Superficial cervical lymph nodes
