Anatomy Flashcards
Type of epithelium found in the urinary system? Function?
TRANSITIONAL EPITHELIUM. ACCOMMODATES FOR URINE
Know the order of the portions of the male urethra.
PROSTATIC URETHRA, MEMBRANOUS URETHRA, & SPONGY URETHRA
What stimulates the kidneys to release EPO? What does EPO do?
LOW BLOOD OXYGEN; INCREASES ERYTHROCYTE PRODUCTION
Where are the kidneys relative to the peritoneum?
BEHIND IT; ANTERIOR SIDE IS COVERED BUT POSTERIOR IS NOT; RETROPERITONEUM
Explain and compare the arrangement/location of the left and right kidneys in the body.
LEFT KIDNEY—BETWEEN T12 & L3 VERTEBRAE. RIGHT KIDNEY—2 cm INFERIOR TO LEFT KIDNEY (TO ACCOMMODATE LIVER)
Know some of the basic functions of the kidneys.
FILTERS BLOOD OF WASTE PRODUCTS & CONVERTS FILTRATE INTO URINE; MAINTAIN HOMEOSTASIS, REGULATE IONS, GLUCOSE LEVELS, & pH
Know the protective layers of the kidney in order.
FIBROUS CAPSULE, PERINEPHRIC FAT (ADIPOSE CT), RENAL FASCIA (DENSE IRREGULAR CT), PARANEPHRIC FAT (ADIPOSE CT)
CORTEX—
OUTER LAYER OF KIDNEY.
MEDULLA—
INNER PART.
RENAL COLUMN:
EXTENSIONS OF CORTEX THAT EXTEND INTO MEDULLA AREA.
RENAL PYRAMID:
TRIANGULAR SHAPED, SHELL-LIKE INNER PART.
CORTICOMEDULLARY JUNCTION:
WHERE MEDULLA & CORTEX MEET.
RENAL PAPILLA:
TIP OF THE PYRAMIDS THAT DRAIN
