Anatomy - 1 abdominal and inguinal regions Flashcards
which organs does the greater pelvis contain
abdominal and pelvic organs
which organs does the lesser pelvis contain
pelvic organs only
what is the boundary between the greater and lesser pelvis?
pelvic inlet
which type of peritoneum lines the
i) abdominal wall
ii) organs
I) parietal
ii) visceral
what connects the two layers of peritoneum and what are the two functions of this structure?
connected by ligaments that
1) support abdominal organs
2) allow vessels and nerves to reach the organs
what four muscles make up the anterior abdominal wall?
external oblique, internal oblique, transversus abdominis and rectus abdominis
which anterior wall muscles lay anterolaterally and which anatomical line do they reach?
ext and int oblique and transversus abdominis - reach the mid clavicular line
how do the anterolateral muscles of the ant abdominal wall continue after reaching the mid clavicular line?
as a tendinous sheet - aponeurosis
what is the midline structure called where fines from the L and R apeneurosis meet?
linea alba
where does the linea alba extend from?
xiphoid process to the pubic symphysis
what is the rectus sheath?
the apeneuroses of all three anterolateral muscles
where does the external oblique originate from and where does it insert?
originates from lower 8 ribs
inserts into pubic tubercle, iliac spine and linea alba
what two thoracic muscles does the external oblique interdigitate with?
lat dorsi and serratus anterior
between which two bony landmarks does the apneurosis fold on itself to become the inguinal ligament?
between thee superior iliac spine and the pubic tubercle
where does transverses abdominis originate from and where does it insert ?
originates from inguinal ligament, lower 6 ribs, iliac crest
inserts into linea alba
what anatomical location does the rectus muscle lack a posterior rectus sheet?
below the umbilicus - easy to cut far into the abdominal cavity here
what arteries supply the i) upper ii) mid iii) lower regions of the anterior abdominal wall
i) intercostal arteries
ii) superior and inferior epigastric
iii) circumflex iliac
what is the venous drainage of the anterior abdominal wall?
thoraco epigastric veins
what is the nerve supply of the ant abdo wall?
thoracoabdominal nerves
what is the primary function go muscles in the ant abdominal wall?
flex, torsion or rotate the trunk as well as compress the viscera (apart from ext oblique)
what is the inguinal canal composed of? (floor, ant and post wall, roof)
floor is medial 1/2 of inguinal ligament, anterior wall is external oblique, posterior wall is trasversalis fascia, roof is the conjoint tendon (from int oblique and TV abdomeis fibres)
what makes up the conjoint tendon?
internal oblique and TV abdominis fibres
what type of hernia passes along the length of the inguinal canal?
indirect inguinal hernia
what type of hernia protrudes through a weakned conjoint tendon to appear at the superficial inguinal ring?
direct inguinal hernia
