Anatomical Terms Flashcards
Define the anatomical position
Standing erect with both feet flat on floor, feet slightly apart, face facing forwards, upper limbs by side with palms facing forward
Describe the forearm in anatomical position
- palm facing anteriorly
• Radius and ulna parallel to each other
• Radius lateral to the ulna
What occurs at the distil and proximal end of the forearm when facing posteriorly
- Two bones cross over
- At wrist (distal) end, the radius is medial and ulna is lateral
- At elbow (proximal) they keep original orientations
what is prone and supine position
- Prone position: body lying face-down
* Supine position: body lying face-up
what does anterior refer to in anatomical terms (for different animals?)
Anterior refers to direction of locomotion
o Humans: where belly is (ventral)
o Quadruped (+ embryo): where head is (cranial)
other words for anterior/posterior + meaning
A=ventral= towards front P=dorsal = towards back
other words for superior/inferior + meaning
S=cranial= away from ground I= caudal= towards ground
meaning of medial/lateral
M= towards midline L= away from midline
Meaning of ipsilateral + contralateral
I= same side as structure C= opposite from structure
meaning for superficial + deep
S= towards surface D= away from surface
meaning for proximal +distal
P= nearer to point of attachment D= further form point of attachment
what is the term for ‘between two structures’?
intermediate
Explain sagittal/mid/para
S= vertically (left/right) M= divides equal P= unequal
what directional terms are associated with sagittal planes
medial laterial
explain coronal planes
vertical dividing into anterior/posterior
