Coronal Plane
Divides the body into superior and inferior.
Transverse Plane
Divides the body in two equal left and right halves.
Sagittal Plane
Towards the front.
Anterior
Towards the back.
Posterior
Towards the head.
Superior
Towards the feet.
Inferior
Nearer to the midline of the body.
Medial
Farther from the midline of the body.
Lateral
Closer to the origin or near to the point of attachment.
Proximal
Farther from the origin or point of attachment.
Distal
Towards the surface or on the surface of the body.
Superficial
Away from the surface of the body.
Deep
Movement away from the midline.
Abduction
Movement towards the midline.
Adduction
Movement of the hand with the palm facing up.
Supination
Movement of the hand with the palm facing down.
Pronation
Movement that decreases the angle of the body between two body parts.
Flexion
Movement that increases the angle of the body.
Extension
Movement of the feet away from the tibia; feet pointing to the ground.
Plantarflexion
Movement of the feet towards the tibia; feet pointing to the sky.
Dorsiflexion
Refers to bringing the soles of the feet inwards, facing towards the midline.
Inversion
Refers to bringing the soles of the feet outwards, facing away from the midline.
Eversion
Movement in the transverse plane that displaces a part of the body anteriorly (towards the front).
Protraction
Movement in the transverse plane that displaces a part of the body posteriorly (towards the back).
Retraction
Movement of the shoulders in the inferior direction; downward.
Depression
Movement of the shoulders in the superior direction; upward.
