Anatomy
Study of body structure, oldest, most clinically relevant of basic sciences
Anatomical position
body erect with face ant (forwards), arms at side, palms forward, eyes to the horizon
Sagittal plane
divides body into R and L portions
Mid Sagittal Plane
equal right and left halves
Front/Coronal Plane
Divides body into ant and post
Frontal Plane
Synonymous with coronal plane-ant and post
Transverse Plane
Sup and inf portions
Horizontal Plane
Same as Transverse, Cross-Sectional (sup and inf)
Proximal
Towards the center of the body
Distal
away from the center of the body
Ipsilateral
Same side
Contralateral
Opposite Side
Somatic
refers to the body wall
Visceral
refers to structures in the body cavities
Flexion
Decrease in ant angle of a joint
Extension
increase in ant angle of a joint
Pronation
Turning palms posterioly
Supination
Turning the palms anteriorly
Circumduction
Combo of flexion, extension, abduction, and adduction
Rotation
Movement of a bone around its longitudinal axis
Inversion
turning the sole of foot inward
Eversion
Turning the sole of foot outward
Dorsiflexion
Pointing toes towards shin (upwards)
Plantar Flexion
Pointing toes downwards, drawing heel up
