Anatomical Terminology Flashcards
Define anatomy
The structure of body parts and their relationships to each other. The what?
Define Physiology
How the body works/function
Function is determined by what?
How something in the body is built
Describe Anatomical position
The “frame of reference” Upright position Arms at side Palms face forward(supinated) Feet and face are forward Position always stays the same
Anterior vs Posterior
Anterior- front surface of the body
Posterior- back surface of the body
Superior vs inferior
Superior-higher position, close to the top of the body
Inferior- lower position, close to bottom of the body
BOTH EXCLUDE ARMS AND LEGS
Medial vs lateral
Medial- midline of the body
Lateral- away from midline
How are things in the body named?
Based on position
Proximal vs distal, what part of the body do these describe
Proximal - towards the upper segment of the limb
Distal - towards the lower segment of the limb
ONLY INCLUDES ARMS AND LEGS
Superficial vs deep
Superficial - closer to the surface (muscle/tissue)
Deep - further from the surface
Describe the 3 planes
Sagittal - splits the body from left and right, allows for forward and backward movement
Frontal - splits us into front and back, allows for side to side movement
Transverse - horizontal, superior vs inferior, allows for rotation
Describe the 3 axis
Longitudinal - “North-south”, goes vertically through our midline
Horizontal - “east-west”,
Antro-posterior - located front and back
Which planes match up with which axis
Transverse and longitudinal
Sagittal and horizontal
Frontal and antro-posterior
How are the planes and axis positioned together
Perpendicular to each other
How do we move in our planes and axis
Move through the planes
Moves around the axis
