What is the method for the distillation part of the required practical

Answer 1

• Colled 50cm3 of sea water in a conical flask
• Insert a bung and a delivery tube into the conical flask leading to a test tube in an ice bath
• Gently heat the water and collect the water in the test tube until there is about 4cm depth of distilled water

Things to remember:

• Be aware of hot apparatus
• Ensure end of delivery tube is half way down test tube to avoid suck back

What is the method for the analysis part of the required practicles

Answer 3

• Take samples of different types of water
• Measure the PH of each kind of using universal indicator and a colour chart
• Find the mass of a dry watch glass
• put 3cm of a water sample onto the watch glass on the wtaer bath and heat until all the water evaporates
• Find the mass Residue +the watch glass and subtract the mass of the watch glass to find the mass of the dissolved solids
