What is the function of the ASA grading?
To determine if a person is healthy enough for surgery
What is grade 1 on ASA?
Otherwise healthy
What is grade 2 on ASA?
Mild to moderate systemic disturbance
What is grade 3 on ASA?
Severe systemic disturbance
What is grade 4 on ASA?
Life threatening systemic disturbance
What is grade 5 on ASA?
Moribund patient
What is grade 6 on ASA?
Organ retrieval
What drugs should be stopped/ reviewed before surgery?
Diabetes mellitus medication
Anticoagulants
Which drugs are okay to continue before surgery?
Anti-epileptics
Inhalers
Anti-anginal medication
What is the function of the exercise tolerance test?
The amount of exercise a patient can do without getting breathless
How is exercise tolerance measured?
In MET’s
What is the reduction in mortality per MET?
15% reduction in mortality
What does MET 2 indicate?
They can walk round the house
What does MET 3 indicate?
They can do light housework
What does MET 4 indicate?
Walk 100-200m on flat
What does MET 5 indicate?
Walk up a flight of stairs or up a hill
What does MET 6 indicate?
Walk on the flat at a brisk pace
What does MET 7 indicate?
Play golf, mountain walk, dance, or any form of exercise
What does MET 8 indicate?
Run a short distance
What does MET 9 indicate?
Strenuous exercise or heavy lifting
