Anaesthetics Flashcards
When is RSI (rapid sequence induction) used?
When there is an increased risk of aspiration (e.g., hiatal hernia, pt not fasted, hx of reflux etc)
What anaesthetic is commonly used for a nerve block?
Levobupivacaine
What nerves are blocked in a fascia-iliaca nerve block?
lateral cutaneous nerve, obturator nerve, femoral nerve.
What is Suxamethonium Apnoea?
Pts don’t gave the plasma cholinesterases to metabolise suxamethonium (paralytic agent). This causes a build up of the drug at the post-synaptic membrane at the NMJ.
Pts have reduced effort to cough/breathe spontaneously at the end of a procedure and will desaturate, they need to be intubated and ventilated.
What are the features of Malignant Hyperthermia?
Rapid increase in body temperature, muscle rigidity, metabolic acidosis, tachycardia, and increased exhaled carbon dioxide.
What is the management of Malignant Hyperthermia?
Administer 200mg intravenous dantrolene and focus on restoring normothermia.
What is local anaesthetic systemic toxicity?
Mx?
LA causes seizures and cardiovascular instability.
Mx with lipid emulsification therapy.
