Anaerobic Respiration Flashcards
1
Q
When does anaerobic respiration happen?
A
When there is no oxygen.
2
Q
What are the characteristics of anaerobic respiration?
A
- Not as efficient as aerobic respiration because glucose molecules are not completely broken down.
- End product is lactic acid which is poisonous.
- Glucose = Lactic acid + Energy
3
Q
Why do we have muscle fatigue?
A
The build up of lactic acid in the muscle. This creates an oxygen debt (Amount of oxygen needed to remove lactic acid.)
4
Q
Why do some people last longer during exercise?
A
- In a ft person the heart and lungs will have a good supply of oxygen for a good while.
- In a less fit individual their muscles will run short of oxygen much quicker compared to a fit person.
5
Q
How is anaerobic respiration in other organisms?
A
1.When plants perform anaerobic respiration they form ethanol + CO2.
2. Anaerobic respiration in yeast cells is called fermentation.
3. glucose + ethanol + CO2
