Anaerobic pathways Flashcards

1
Q

Key ideas of anaerobic pathways

A
  1. NAD+ is needed for glycolysis to continue
    - pyruvate to lactate/ethanol process allowa NAD+ recycling
  2. Anaerobic pathways is crucial for energyproduction whrn O2 is unavaliable.

Q

Why does anaerobic respiration happen?

A

without oxygen, ETC cannot be performed, and the limited NAD+ is used up!

Q

Alcohol fermentation

A
  1. 2 pyruvate molecules enter fermentation
  2. decarboxylated, make Co2 and acetaldehyde
  3. oxidizes NADH –> NAD+ + ethanol

Q

Lactate fermentation

A
  1. pyruvate reduced by NADH
  2. NAD+ and lactate
  3. NAD+ converted back to pyruvate and NAHD so it can enter kreb’s cycle to replenish energy stores

2 atp produced

  • if lactice acid builds up, you can get a muscle cramp.
  • this is why you need to take in more oxygen!
