Anaerobic pathways Flashcards
1
Q
Key ideas of anaerobic pathways
A
- NAD+ is needed for glycolysis to continue
- pyruvate to lactate/ethanol process allowa NAD+ recycling - Anaerobic pathways is crucial for energyproduction whrn O2 is unavaliable.
2
Q
Why does anaerobic respiration happen?
A
without oxygen, ETC cannot be performed, and the limited NAD+ is used up!
3
Q
Alcohol fermentation
A
- 2 pyruvate molecules enter fermentation
- decarboxylated, make Co2 and acetaldehyde
- oxidizes NADH –> NAD+ + ethanol
2 atp produced
4
Q
Lactate fermentation
A
- pyruvate reduced by NADH
- NAD+ and lactate
- NAD+ converted back to pyruvate and NAHD so it can enter kreb’s cycle to replenish energy stores
2 atp produced
- if lactice acid builds up, you can get a muscle cramp.
- this is why you need to take in more oxygen!
