Anaerobic and Aerobic Exercises Flashcards
Aerobic Respiration Equation
Glucose + Oxygen => Energy + Carbon Dioxide + water
Anaerobic Respiration Equation
Glucose => energy + latic acid
Examples of sports where anaerobic respiration is involved
Activities like sprinting, weightlifting, jumping, and throwing are anaerobic in nature.
Examples of sports where aerobic respiration is involved
Activities such as long distance running and playing a match for example such as football or rugby.
What does the abbreviation EPOC stand for
Excess Post-Oxygen Consumption
What is Excess Post-Oxygen Consumption (EPOC)
Oxygen debt is the amount of oxygen that the performer was sort of during the exercise. Rapid and heavy breathing after exercise will return the body into a resting state and repay the oxygen debt.
The recovery process from vigorous exercise
- Cool down – maintain an increased breathing rate and blood flow.
This is important to assist in recovery as extra oxygen is required to return the body to its pre-exercise state.
Gradual reduction in heart rate will allow the body to
successfully remove latic acid and carbon dioxide. - Stretching - A thorough full body stretch will aid the removal of lactic acid and reduce the stiffness and soreness felt post exercise.

Rehydration and glycogen stores
Eating a high
carbohydrate meal will speed up the glycogen
replacement, and should be done within 1 hour post exercise.
- Ice Baths - Ice baths are a very popular recovery method. After a hard
training session or match, performers get into an ice bath for up
to 10 minutes. The cold water causes the blood vessels to tighten
and drains the blood out of the legs.
