General Winfield Scott
Did other generals agree or disagree with the plan
Disagree
Steps of plan
Surround south
Split south
Capture Richmond
Where was the naval blockade
The Gulf of Mexico AND the Atlantic Ocean. This would prevent them from trading
How many soldiers were (in theory) sent to capture the MISSISSIPPI RIVER
About 60,000 troops
What happened to the plan?
The plan was never actually used, because it was too passive. George McClellan had a different plan, but he ended up accomplishing the same tasks that the plan has
When did the president declare the blockade
On the 19th of April, six days after the fall of Sumter, the President issued a proclamation declaring the blockade of the Southern States from South Carolina to Texas. On the 27th the blockade was extended to Virginia and North Carolina.
Why was the blockade important
Because the south only grew cash crops, and we could starve them and not allow them to trade cash crops for other things
Blockade runners
Blockade runners are brave sailors who tried to go past the union blockade to trade with other countries they traded the South’s cash crops for money
What was the last city that the Union had to split to control the Mississippi
Vicksburg
Why was splitting the south important
This was important because the south would lose communication from their other half, and they would have less people to fight from the half with the capital in it.
When was Richmond captured
April 1865. The city was evacuated, and Jefferson DVDs went on the run. Accomplishing this step was the beginning of the end for the confederacy
