AMSCO Unit 2 Chapter 3 Flashcards
Population Distribution
the pattern of human settlement - the spread of people across the Earth
Representing it on map highlights place that are crowded, sparsely settled or even empty
Population Density
a measure of the average population per square mile or kilometer of an area
Ex. how crowded a place is
Mid-latitudes
the regions between 30 degrees and 60 degrees, both north and south of the equator
The basic principle that most people want to live on the most ___
Desirable land
Social Stratification
the hierarchical division of people into groups based on factors such as economic status, power, and/or ethnicity
Arithmetic population density
calculated by dividing a region’s population by its total area
Physiological population density
calculated by dividing population by the amount of the arable land
Arable land
land suitable for growing crops
Agricultural population density
compares the number of farmers to the area to the area of arable land
Redistricting
urban areas are counting on to increase in the population of rural areas are usually shrinking, these boundary adjustments called redistricting, usually result in physically smaller urban districts and larger rural districts
Infrastructure
the facilities and structures that allow people to carry out their typical activities
Overpopulation
having more people than it can support is partially dependent on its population distribution and density
Carrying Capacity
the number of people a region can support without damaging the environment
Composition
the makeup of ages and sexes in a population
Age-Sex composition or Population pyramid
based only on age and gender data, but it can provide information on birth rates, death rates, how long people live on average, and economic development
