Amputations Flashcards
Best tx for sig blood loss and mangled limbs
Tourniquet - really no other tx that works
Rule for tourniquet is called..
role of 2s
Role of 2’s
2” above wound
2” wide
2” Turn tourniquet twice
If this doesn’t work apply a 2nd tourniquet 2” above the first
Care of the amputated part
- Remove gross contamination by irrigating w/ NS
- Wrap in saline-impreginated gauze
- Cover to prevent freezing
- Preserve at 4 degrees celsius (1/2 ice and 1/2 water) Put it in plastic w/ water proof tape
2 things to keep in mind w/ amputated part and water/ice
Ice decreases circulation so don’t put it right on top
Water causes hypertonic = swelling so wrap it in a bag w/ water proof tape
Puncture wound is bad because
deeper than wide - higher rates of infection due to the bacteria traveling deep - what did it poke? - Is the object retained?
Puncture wound you???
SOAK.
Teach pt to soak wound 2-3 times a day for 2-4 days
High pressure injury wound..
Pushes the fluid far into the limb - paint gun/grease gun
Puncture wound at the bottom of the foot carry..
high rate for infection
