Amplitude and Intensity Flashcards
Amplitude
Is the maximum degree of change in a atmospheric pressure
In a pure sine wave, what is the true average pressure of a sound wave?
Zero
Root mean square (RMS)
Measures informative index of average pressure of a wave
Decibel scale
Relates amplitude/intensity to our perception of loudness
Give one reason why it is preferable to represent loudness with a scale that is logarithmic rather than linear.
It accommodates the wide range of human hearing
Does the value 0 dB indicate the absence of any sound? If not, what does it indicate?
No. Does not mean ‘no sound’.
0 dB means that the sound in question has the same intensity and amplitude as the standard reference sound.
Dynamic range
Measure that the amplitude/intensity is equivalent of MPF
Voice range profile (phonetogram)
Plots dynamic range across frequencies
Explain how dynamic range measure differs at different points in an individual’s frequency range.
Dynamic range is greatest in the middle of the F0 range, smaller at speaker’s highest and lowest F0.
Describe the characteristic shape of a typical VRP.
Dynamic range is greatest in the middle of the F0 range
Smaller at speaker’s highest and lowest F0
Why is there a notch in a typical speaker’s VRP?
Represents point of change to a different vocal register
Identify one clinical diagnosis that you would expect to be associated with an atypical VRP.
Intervention for vocal pathology
