Amplification - Monaural vs. Binaural Flashcards
If a person has HL in both ears, we will use _______ HAs for what two main reasons?
Binaural
1) better localization of sound sources
2) better understanding of speech in noise
How does binaural HAs give better localization of sound sources?
The CNS compares time and intensity cues to determine where the sound is coming from
How does binaural HAs give better understanding of speech in noise?
The “binaural squelch” effects can better seperate a signal from noise when it comes to both ears
Aside from better localization, what are 2 more reasons for binaural HAs?
1) “head shadow” effect
2) less overall gain
What is the “head shadow” effect
Person can hear equally well from both sides of the head
Why is less gain overall needed with binaural (rather than monaural) fittings?
The binaural summation effect, the sound from each sides add together to be louder
If a person has HL in just one ear what do we do?
Typically, fit one HA and follow normal procedure
What is a special case when someone as unilateral HL and we dont do monaural fittings?
The HL is too sever, and the combo of its degree and its distortion is too great
What are 3 types of people that should not be overlooked as HA candidates?
1) have difficulty with localization
2) difficulty in noise
3) difficulty when signal is on bad side
Research reported ___% of children with one normal and one unaidable ear did what?
35%
Failed at least one grade (10x the normal rate)
