Ampelography Flashcards
Ampelography
A discipline allowing the description of all of the grapevine varieties in the world in order to make their identification possible.
2 key points for ampelography
- It is based on the descriptions of different grapevine organs; primarily the leaf (it is less susceptible to environmental conditions)
- It is crucial that the described organ morphology is not affected by the interaction with the environment
Variety distinction with the difference between grape name synonyms and homonyms
- Synonym: Varieties having the same genotype, but different name (Cannonao, grenache)
- Homonyms: Varieties having different genotypes, but the same name (chardonnay and Pinot Blanc
Why is there a problem with Homonyms
Homonyms exist because of varietal families such as the case of lambrusco, malvasia, moscato
3 areas for descriptor lists
- OIV (Cultural and technological characteristics)
- UPOV (Protection of new varietals)
- IPBGR (Gene Banks)
5 OIV Descriptors
- OIV Numbers
- Notes, word describing corresponding figure
- Example varieties are indicated if possible
- Definitions: additional information about how and when the characteristics need to be described
- Figures
3 descriptor classifications
- Alternative: may be present or absent
- Qualitative: show discrete discontinuous states with no arbitrary limit on the number of states
- Quantitative: Measurable on a one dimensional scale and showing continuous variation between two extremes. Scores can vary from 1-9
Ampelographic Card Definition
Descriptive method that is essentially based on the morphological plant habit.
Ampelometry Definition
Measurements of parameters from different plant organs (Leaves - fillometry, Fruits - Carpometry)
Determination of secondary metabolites
Anthrocyanins and Volatiles
Analysis of isoenzyme systems
Isoenzyme is one of the different chemical structures
of an enzyme.
DNA Analysis
Molecular markers (RFLP, SSRs), and use of PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) method.
