Amnesia Flashcards
What is retrograde and anterograde amnesia?
Retrograde: Old memories can’t be remembered
Anterograde: new memories can’t be remembered
What is the STM and LTM deficits in amnesic patients?
Seems to have normal STM
LTM: Seems to have normal implicit memory, but impaired on explicit memory
What are the criticism of the explicit memory deficit findings in amnesic patients?
- Some tests show normal explicit memory in patients
- Some tests show impaired implicit memory in patients
–> Is there a better description of amnesic patients?
What is the main problem with previous research?
Different brain damages (frontal lobe, medial temporal, hippocampus) all treated the same - maybe there’s differences in memory performance due to differences in brain damage?
What did Aggleton & Brown propose?
Hippocampal system - contextual recollection (remember)
Perirhnal system - familiarity (know)
How to test: Single case studies instead of all patients
Support: Limited for know effect, but shown in recollection
