Where are hydrophobic residues found in an amino acid?
On the interior of the amino acid whereas hydrophilic residues are found on the exterior where they interact with the solvent.
The word ‘subunit’ refers to which level of protein structure?
The quaternary structure.
Alpha helices and beta sheets refer to which level of protein structure?
The secondary structure.
Isoleucine and leucine are examples of what kind of amino acid?
Essential amino acids.
What is an essential amino acid?
Amino acids which cannot be made by the body and must therefore be ingested through diet.
What does the post-translational addition of a carboxyl group to glutamate do to the molecule?
Increases the affinity for calcium ions = necessary for clotting
