This was a settlement that the Mormons created Because Smith was unwilling to go further west they made there own laws and they began to prosper they tried to create an ideal society no poverty no drinking or smoking. They even created there own army of 4000 called the Nauvoo legion

In 1844 Joseph smith received a revelation from god that the Mormons should practice polygamy (More than one wife per person) due to the surplus of of women in Nauvoo Some Mormons denounced Smith as a false prophet this was then posted into there news paper and Smith being called a dictator and he was arrested then on 27 June 1845 a mob attacked and killed Joseph Smith in his cell
