What lead to the north and south of American having different opinions in slavery?
The south relied on slaves for agricultural work. Wealth was gained in the north through farming but also from factories. Northern farms didn’t use slaves.

Who was Harriet Beecher Stowe?
An northern abolitionist who wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin in 1851, which became one of the best selling books of the 19th century. She helped change the opinion on slavery (mostly in the north).
Who was Harriet Tubman?
A slave who escaped to the north and spent her life freeing slaves via The Underground Railroad. 50,000 slaves were helped to escape via The Underground Railroad.
What was sectionalism?
Loyalty to your region not your country
What were the major differences of opinion between the north and the south?
- North against states rights, South for states rights
- North for increased communication and railroads, South against
- North against slavery, South for slavery

Why was the Missouri Compromise agreed on?
Missouri requested to join the union as a slave sate, this would have lead to there being an imbalance between slave and free states.
Why didn’t Americans want there to be an imbalance between slave and free states?
Then the side with more states would have a political advantage
What was the Missouri compromise?
Missouri was allowed as a slave state, but Maine would join as a free state. No more slave states would be allowed above a line drawn at the latitude 36 degrees north.
