Before the new deal who did African Americans tend to vote for?
Republicans- they abolished slavery

Around 2 million signed a petition for federal aid to move back to Africa

Refused to guarantee mortgages for African Americans who tried to buy in white neighbourhoods
How did the civilian conservation corps discriminate?
Maintained segregated camps
How did the social security act discriminate?
It excluded the jobs that blacks people traditionally filled
What was the impact of the Agricultural Adjustment Administration on African Americans?
It hit them hard because 40% of all black workers made their living as sharecroppers and tenant farmers
White landlords could make more money by leaving land unharmed
AAA policies forced more than 100’000 blacks off farmland in 1933&1934
What bill did FDR fail to support?
Anti-lynching bill

FDR appointed Mary McLeod Bethune, a black educator to the advisory committee of the National Youth administration- blacks received a share of the NYA funds because of her efforts
The Works progress administration was color-blind and blacks in northern cities benefited from their programs
Harold Ickes was a strong CR supporter and poured federal funds into black schools and hospitals
