What is the description of Alzheimer’s disease?
It’s a degenerative condition associated with a progressive loss of nerve cells or neurons.
What challenge is Alzheimer’s disease?
It is a mental challenge
What causes Alzheimer’s?
Overproduction of protein. The changes in the chemicals in the brain leads to plaques and tangles in the brains structure, results in the death of brain cells.
What are some of the signs and symptoms for Alzheimer’s disease?
Increased forgetfulness Confusion = can't follow conversation Disorientation = wandering Language affected Later stages = hallucinations Lack of inhibition = aggressive outbursts
What are the physical impacts?
Immobility
Incontinence = unable to control bladder and bowel functions
Initial loss of skills = chewing, swallowing and speaking
What are the intellectual impacts?
Cognitive functions impaired/lost
Confusion = inability to remember names
Problem solving + reasoning makes everyday activities difficult
What are the emotional and social impacts?
Mood swings
Withdrawn = loss of confidence/ communication problems
What are the financial impacts?
Required assistance
Entitled to benefits to employ assistance e.g. Domicile the carer
What are the impacts on family and carers?
Strain
Give up aspects of their own life
Sadness = disease progresses
What are the societal barriers?

Barriers to buildings and facilities through poor mobility in the later stages.
