Alzeimer's Flashcards
1
Q
What are the medication options for Alzheimer’s disease?
A
Cholinesterase inhibitor (Donepezil)
NMDA antagonist (Memantine)
2
Q
What is the MOA for Donepezil and what are the results
A
Blocks cholinesterase which inhibits the breakdown of acetylcholine. This leads to increased acetylcholine levels in the brain
3
Q
What stage of Alzheimer’s is Donepezil prescribed for
A
All stages
4
Q
Adverse effects of Donepezil
A
- Cholinergic effects (urinary frequency, nausea, diarrhea, GI issues)
- Bradycardia/syncope =fall risk
- drug interactions: avoid tricyclic antidepressants and anticholinergics
5
Q
What medication is prescribed for moderate and severe stages of Alzheimer’s
A
Memantine
6
Q
What drug has MOA: regulates glutamate levels in the brain
A
Memantine
7
Q
Cholinesterase inhibitor
A
Donepezil
8
Q
NMDA antagonist
A
Memantine
9
Q
Alzheimer’s is caused by an imbalance in…?
A
Too much glutamate not enough acetylcholine
