what is the typical age of diagnosis
40-70 years, avg of 55
what is the average survival rate?
2-5 post diagnosis
How does early ALS present?
muscle weakness, tightness, cramping, fasciculations, symptoms appear in UEs or LE’s. May report dropping items, falls, or fine motor problems
how does middle ALS present?
widespread weakness, muscle atrophy, muscle shortnening, trouble speaking, swalling and breathing. affective changes possible
how does late
/final ALS present
general paralysis to an inability, to move, swallow and speak. respiratory failure
what does ALS intervetnion need to be?
collabrative and effective
what are ALS intervention goals?
maximize function
improve independence, safety and QoL
being proactive about maintaing independence and preventing complications
what are ALS specific intervetnions?
therapeutic exercise
energy conservation
