MOA clonidine
Binds to presynaptic terminal Alpha2Receptors, which inhibits Norepi from being released into the synaptic cleft - creating a decrease in sympathetic outflow.

Alpha 2 Agonists - centrally acting
Can Clonidine and Methyldopa (Alpha 2 Agonists) be used with diuretics? Why?
Yes. they can be used with diuretics because MOA can concurrently increase serum sodium levels.
MOA methyldopa
Same end effect as clonidine. But it inhibits norepi production before packaged into presynaptic vesicles.

How should a patient stop taking Clonidine or Methyldopa? Why?
Gradually taper dose - do NOT abruptly stop - can cause severe rebound HTN
What patients need to be careful with Methyldopa use?
Methyldopa metabolites will accumulate and cause prolonged hypotension in patients with renal failure.
