allsorts of questions !! Flashcards
why study medicine
- my desire to study medicine is because;
going to the hospital with family. Doctors understood that illnesses can manifest all types of pain whether that be emotionally and physically. and they were able to heal both aspects to make a person complete. from this experience, Furthermore, at all of my volunteering roles I witnessed how being passionate can change an individual for the good which I believe that medicine will allow me to do.
I also had an interest in the sciences, in particular in surrounding the human anatomy, however, what really interests me is how mental health and physical health intertwines which lead me to read the book two types of decay.
incorporate kindness
emotionally, mentally physically etc.
science - human anatomy with compassion etc. more than a body etc.
help people on a personal level with science
requires constant learning. not static etc
why not nursing
nurses are crucial to the nhs
day to day care etc without them the nhs will literally collapse
however, as a doctor, I will be given the privilege of having the ultimate responsibility for the patients - which will allow me to show compassion and cater to the needs of the patient and provide holistic patient centre care
Doctors also have clinical knowledge beyond their speciality- this means that I will be able to learn all parts of the sciences etc.
why do you think medicine is right for me ?
one of the first steps I took to know that medicine was the ideal course for me initially was that in year 9 I took part in the mitochondrial research programme which research methods and drugs which can be used to cure mitochondrial diseases by increasing the number of mitochondria
showed me that my passions for the sciences can benefit individuals health.
work experience - I was lucky to have an opportunity to do an online workshop with the cntw where I learnt about the day to day lives of doctors in particular psychiatrists during the lockdown. I discovered how the doctors all do teamwork so the patient can receive the best care.

UK NHS
Healthcare through tax generation ensures all members of the country have access to all health services.
One benefit to healthcare via tax generation is that it does not economically discriminate against any group of people
It also helps to controls which drugs and medical devices that are used and funded by the NHS.
Some may argue that it leads to the lack of options in healthcare treatment to patients-
The UK has one of the best Healthcare systems in the world and has a relatively high life expectancy at around 81.
social health
Common in European countries.
Mandatory scheme, usually through employers.
Cheaper for those with health conditions as everyone pays into it.
Based on income, unemployed can still enrol.
Individual doesn’t necessarily pay more or less.
But you can pay for better service, or shorter waiting times.
free healthcare
Free healthcare promotes general welfare, as there is a correlation between countries with free healthcare having a higher life expectancy.
Doctors should not do anything that harms patients such as turning patients down that may not be able to afford treatment.
It promotes health equality for all people with no discrimination.
Do you think medicine should be more about changing behaviour to prevent disease or treating existing disease?
vaccination
non-communicable diseases
anti-smoking campaign
food deserts in america- healthy eating etc- poverty etc.
at the end
holistic care best for individual
change to be healthier etc.
preventative medicine
Preventive medicine is when individuals are encouraged to take precautions to prevent the onset of a disease or complications. An experiment involving preventive medicine was performed in the USA where for months participants were told to follow a healthier lifestyle and were educated about healthy living, overall, the blood pressure of all participants decreased, therefore decreasing the chances of developing cardiovascular diseases.
change4life
. This is why programmes ran by the NHS such as Change4Life play such a vital role in our society as it provides a broad range of advice to the public. If more people have better health literacy it means that the public can make better decisions when it comes to actions which their health and the health of others. This means that preventative medicine benefits the greater good of society and as fewer people are ill, doctors have more time to provide quality care for individuals with unpreventable, inherited diseases such as cystic fibrosis
eventually
old age - illnesses will happen
food deserts
Preventing disease through behaviour is a complicate process, it is easy for a health professional to tell someone to exercise more to prevent diseases, but there could be economical, economic and social reasons why the individual cannot go out to exercise even if they desire to. In America, the term “food deserts” has been coined to describe low-income regions that lack nutritional healthy food. Unfortunately, doctors do not have the capability of changing the food industry so people can eat healthy to prevent diseases. Therefore, doctors must be aware that there are limitations to how much a person can change their behaviour due to the structure of society.
diabetes 2
ulcers- limbs amputation
lower calorie diet
diabetes could be reversible- rememission research by too much fat in liver and pancreas high weight loss - 10-15kg all medication s
