What do reactive metals do when added to water?
They fizz
Metal + Water -> metal hydroxide + hydrogen
What happens when you add a metal to an acid?
Acid + metal -> salt + hydrogen
How can you tell how reactive a metal is?
React it with a dilute acid. The more reactive it is, the faster the reaction will happen.
Fill 3 boiling tubes with the same volume of dilute acid (hydrochloric or sulfuric). Add your 3 metals (same size, volume and shape). The speed is determined by the rate of bubbles of hydrogen (can be tested using burning splint test).
Do potassium, sodium, lithium and calcium react well with water?
Yes! They react vigorously with water.
Does magnesium, zinc and iron react well in water?
They don’t react much at all in water, but do react with steam.
What is the general equation for metals reacting with hydrochloric acid?
Metal + hydrochloric acid -> metal chloride + hydrogen
What is the general equation for metals reacting with sulfuric acid?
Metal + sulfuric acid -> metal sulfate + hydrogen
What is the general equation for metals reacting with nitric acid?
Metal + nitric acid -> metal nitrate + hydrogen
What 3 ways can stop iron from rusting?
Barrier methods, galvanising and sacrificial protection.
What is the barrier method?
The barrier method prevents iron from rusting, by coating iron with paint/oil/plastic to stop it from coming into contact with water and oxygen. It is a cheap way of protecting iron, however it can scratch off easily, and it is time consuming as you are constantly re-applying the coating.
What is galvanising?
Galvanising is a way of preventing iron from rusting by coating it with chunks of zinc. It works because zinc is way more reactive than iron, so the zinc will react with the oxygen and water. It is good because it works when it is scratched, however once it has related it needs re-doing.
What is sacrificial protection?
Sacrificial protection is a way of preventing iron from rusting. You put a more reactive metal onto iron, so that the metals reacts with water and oxygen instead of the iron. It is good because it works when scratched, however once it has reacted it needs re-doing. Galvanising is a form of sacrificial protection.
What does redox mean?
Redox is the term for reduction and oxidation.
What is oxidation?
Oxidation is the gain of oxygen/ the loss of electrons during a chemical reaction.
What is reduction?
Reduction is the loss of oxygen/ gain of electrons or gain of hydrogen during a chemical reaction.
