All Terrain Vehicles Flashcards
What is an ATV?
An all terrain vehicle
Typically, how many wheels does an ATV have?
Can have between 2-6, more typically 4
What are other names for ATV?
Quad bike
Four track
Quadricycle
What is special about the tyres of an ATV?
Usually low pressure so they can get over rough off road terrain
Thick with lots of grip for the rough terrain
What is an ATV used for?
Off road driving although it can drive on smooth surfaces as well
What kinds of surfaces are ATV good on when other cars would struggle?
Muddy Wet Snowy Icy Rough terrain with big stones High inclines with rubble Woodland Beach sand Scrambling over broken rock Through deep puddles
What is a disadvantage of ATV over other cars
Use up a lot more fuel thus poor fuel consumption
What sort of things do you need to think about when designing an ATV?
Whether they can manage rough terrain. How good at the tyres for holding on to the ground, they need to be grippy.
How heavy is it. You don’t want it to be so light it will topple over, but nor so heavy it is difficult to manoeuvre or get up hills.
How easily are they manoeuvred (turned)
Endurance - how robust are they in rough conditions, will it rust, will the tyres puncture
How efficient is it? Does it use lots of fuel
