Q

Describe the mechanism of gluing for PVA

A

PVA (Poly Vinyl Acetate) is a water based adhesive which is white in colour drying to semi-translucent. It soaks into the absorbent surface then dries to give a strong plastic bond. It dries by evaporation and absorption.

It cannot stick together NON absorbent surfaces

Q

What is the mechanism of epoxy resin (Araldite) binding?

A

This is a waterproof adhesive and gives a strong joint.

It comes in 2 tubes: a resin and a hardener. These are mixed together in equal amount and then applied with a spreader.

Joints need to be held together while the glue drys

16
Q

How long does super glue take to dry?

A

Instant

17
Q

How does superglue actually glue?

A

Add glue to one side press it against the other uncoated side. It will bind instantly and doesn’t need to be help together.

18
Q

What material is contact adhesive used to glue?

A

Wood
Fabric
Porous material

19
Q

How long does contact adhesive take to glue?

A

30-40 mins

20
Q

What is the mechanism of gluing for contact adhesive?

A

Apply to both surfaces
Needs to set partly before bonding
Works with porous material
