Adhesives Flashcards
Name 6 different types of adhesive
- PVA
- Epoxy resin or Araldite
- Hot glue or hot melt adhesive
- Dichloromethane
- Superglue (cyanocrylate)
- Contact adhesive
What type of material is PVA used to glue?
Wood
Card
Paper
What is the drying time of PVA glue?
4-24 hours
Describe the mechanism of gluing for PVA
PVA (Poly Vinyl Acetate) is a water based adhesive which is white in colour drying to semi-translucent. It soaks into the absorbent surface then dries to give a strong plastic bond. It dries by evaporation and absorption.
It cannot stick together NON absorbent surfaces
What type of material is epoxy resin Araldite used to glue?
Wood
Metal
Glass
Stone
Hoe long does epoxy resin (Araldite) take to dry?
30 mins to 6h
What is the mechanism of epoxy resin (Araldite) binding?
This is a waterproof adhesive and gives a strong joint.
It comes in 2 tubes: a resin and a hardener. These are mixed together in equal amount and then applied with a spreader.
Joints need to be held together while the glue drys
What is hot glue (hot melt adhesive) used to glue?
Paper, cardboard and cloth
How long does hot glue (hot melt adhesive) take to cool?
2 mins
What is the mechanism of gluing for hot glue (hot melt adhesive)?
This adhesive is waterproof bit is WEAK and only suitable for modelling or temporary fixings.
It comes in a solid glue stick gun
It is heated in a special gun and applied direct from the nozzle
What material is dichloromethane used to glue?
Thermoplastics
How long does dichloromethane take to dry?
10 mins
What is the mechanism of gluing for dichloromethane?
It is a waterproof adhesive which gives a medium strength joint. It comes in liquid form.
Joints need to be held together while the glue drys.
What is cyanocrylate also known as?
Superglue
What can superglue bind together?
Metal
Ceramics
