Q

Describe the process of cracking:
Catalytic cracking

A

1) The long chain hydrocarbons are heated until they are vaporised
2) The vapour is then passed over a hot catalyst
3) Thermal decomposition then takes place
4) This cause the break down of the longer carbon chains into shorter carbon chains- The products can be alkanes or alkenes

Q

Describe the process of cracking:
Steam cracking

A

1) Hydrocarbons are mixed with steam and are heated to a high temperature
2) This causes thermal decomposition and breaks the long hydrocarbon chains into shorter hydrocarbon chains
