Q

What is an alkene

A

A hydro carbon with a double bond between two of the carbon atoms, they are in saturated. Methane can’t be a alkene as it only has one carbon atom

Q

Test for seeing if a hydro carbon is an alkane or alkene

A

Bromine water is used and a solution with the hydro carbon is added. If it’s an alkane there is no colour change if it’s an alkene there the liquid become colourless

Q

How is cracking done

A

Long hydro carbons are heated and thermally decomposed. This breaks it into s shorter hydro carbon and alkene a

Q

Different polymer uses

A

Polyethene used for plastic bags, wire insulation and cling film. Cheap and flexible
Polypropene used for buckets and Bowles. Flexible and shatterproof with high softening point
Polychloroethene used for making PVC
Polytetrafluoroethene used for non stick coatings. Tough, slippery resistant to corrosion and good insulator
