Alkali Metals Flashcards
Properties?
Low density (float on water)
Soft (can cut with knife)
Shiny when cut recently (quickly oxidise)
Observations for metal chlorides
White solid/salt
Reaction is very vigourus (lot of bright light and heat produced)
Dissolve in water/colourless solutions
Observation of metal hydroxides (with water)
Very vigourus
Fizzing/bubbles
Floats and moves
Metal dissolves eventually
What happens when lithium and water react (symbol equation)
2Li + 2H*2O - > 2LiOH + H2
Observations of metal oxide?
Room temperature
Colour change from shiny grey to dull white
If heated they burn vigourusly forming a white smoke (the metal oxide)
What can group 1 oxides do?
Dissolve in water to form metal hydroxide which are alkaline
What is the colour of an alkaline solution?
Purple
How can you prevent oxygen from reacting with a metal
Put the metal in oil
