alcohols Flashcards
1
Q
what are alcohols functional group
A
OH and they end in “ol” suffix
2
Q
properties of alcohols
A
- flammable
- undergo combustion to produce carbon dioxide and water
- react with sodium to produce sodium ethoxide, sodium salt
-reacts with carboxylic acids to make esthers - reacts with oxygen to make carboxylic acids
3
Q
why are alcohols used as solvents
A
because they can dissolve things that water cant dissolve, such as hydrocarbons, oils and fats
4
Q
why are alcohols used as fuels
A
they burn cleanly and is less smelly
5
Q
what is fermentation
A
an anaerobic process which converts sugars into ethanol
- sugar –> ethanol + carbon dioxide
6
Q
conditions needed for fermentation
A
- sugars dissolved in water, and mixed with yeast ( a slightly acidic solution)
- warm temperature 25-35 degrees
7
Q
what happens if yeast cells needed for fermentation get too hot
A
their enzymes become denatured and fermentation stops.
