Binge Drinking
-male-5+ drinks in 2 hour period
female-4+ drinks in a 2 hour period
Heavy drinking
male: 15 or ore drinks per week
female: 8 or more drinks a week
alcohol use disorder
-medical diagnosis made on criteria made based on the DSM-5
-either mild(2-3), moderate(4-5), severe(6+) depending on how many criteria are met
Screening for AUD
-treatable condition
-only 10% of individuals recieve treatment
in chronic alcohol use, what causes the severe effects of alcohol withdrawal?
-alcohol is a GABA agonist so our body over compensates by making more glutamate to be in equilibrium
0when stopping drinking, GABA drops, glutamate activity is still high

-used to know how bad alcohol withdrawal is
-assessment tool
Post acute withdrawal syndrome
-second phase of withdrawal symptoms as brain recalibrates after addiction
-lasts up to 3 months
Medically Managed Withdrawal
-use medications to manage alcohol withdrawal
-anyone experiancing withdrawal symptoms or at high risk for withdrawal symptoms is a candidate
Benzodiazepines
-enhance GABA effects by binding to benzo receptors
-recommend treatment for mild to severe alcohol withdrawal
-CIWA>10
Gabapentin
-GABA analog
-safe and effective alternative to benzodiazepine for treatment for mild alcohol withdrawal in out patient
-CIWA <10
Naltrexone
-mu opioid receptor antagonist
reduces perceived enjoyment of drinking alcohol and may decrease cravings
Acamprosate
-reduces alcohol cravings
-6 tablets per day!!!
-Contraindicated CrCl <30
Disulfiram
-blocks acetaldehyde dehydrogenase
-makes people sick when they drink
-does not decrease cravings
-avoid alcohol for 14 days
