Wernicke Korsakoff Syndrome

A
  • psychosis induced by vitamin b1(thiamine) deficiency in alcoholics that causes brain damage
  • s/s: amnesia and confabulation (making up stories)
  • irreversible, preventable condition
  • don’t have to stop drinking just take thiamine

don’t reorient to reality, redirect them to want they can do

Disulfiram, onset and duration and antidote, things to avoid

A
  • alcohol deterrent
  • take two weeks to start and stop working
  • antidote: naltrexone
  • cologne, perfume, hand sanitizer, insect repellent, elixir, aftershave, vanilla extract (can’t have unbaked icing)

Delirium Tremens

A

Occurs after 72 hours after drinking
- life threatening to self and others
- NPO (seizures) or clear liquid
- Private room near, nurses station
- restricted bed rest, no bathroom
- Restraints ( vest or two point) - opposite arm and leg switch q2hr

Treat: anti- HTN, thiamine and tranqulizer
