Albuterol Sulfate Class
Sympathomimetic and bronchodilator
Albuterol MOA
ß agonist (primarily ß2); relaxes bronchial smooth muscle, resulting in bronchodilation; also relaxes vascular and uterine smooth muscle; decreases airway resistance
Albuterol Indications
Treatment of bronchospasm
Treatment of hyperkalemia
Albuterol Contraindications
Synergistic with other sympathomimetics
Use caution in patients with diabetes, hyperthyroidism, and cerebrovascular disease
Albuterol Adverse Reactions
CV: Dysrhythmias, tachycardia (with excessive use), peripheral vasodilation Resp: Bronchospasm (rare paradoxical with excessive use)
CNS: Tremors, nervousness
GI: Nausea, vomiting
Endocrine: Hyperglycemia
Albuterol Incompatibilities
Tricyclic antidepressants (TCA's) and monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors Other sympathomimetics (relative)
Albuterol Adult Dosage
Give 2.5 mg of premixed solution for inhalation (0.083%) via SVN with a mouth piece, or in-line with a ventilatory device. Repeated according to medical control preference.
Albuterol Pediatric Dosage
Give 2.5 mg of premixed solution for inhalation (0.083%) via SVN with a mouth piece, mask, or in-line with a ventilatory device. Repeated according to medical control preference.
May administer up to 5mg per dose according to medical control preference.
