The FAA’s airworthiness directives are legally enforceable rules that apply to the following products: aircraft, aircraft engines, propellers and appliances
When are ADs issued?
- An unsafe condition exists in the product
2. The condition is likely to exist or develop in other products of the same type design
What is a SAIB?
Special Airworthiness Information Bulletin
This is an information tool that alerts, educates, and makes recommendations to the aviation community. SAIBs contain non-regulatory information and guidance that does not meet the criteria for an AD
What is a Special Flight Permit?
21.197 and 21.199
A special flight permit may be issued for an aircraft that may not currently meet applicable airworthiness requirements but is capable of safe flight
What is the purpose of a Special Flight Permit?
- Flying the aircraft to a base where repairs, alterations or maintenance are to be performed or to a point of storage
- Delivering or exporting an aircraft
- Production flight testing new production aircraft
- Evacuating aircraft from areas of imposing danger
- Conducting customer demonstration flights in new production aircraft that have satisfactorily completed production flight tests
What is the procedure for obtaining a flight permit?
An applicant for a special flight permit must submit a statement in a form and manner prescribed by the FAA indicating:
- The purpose of flight
- The proposed itinerary
- The crew required to operate the aircraft and its equipment
- The ways, if any, in which the aircraft does not comply with the applicable airworthiness requirements
- Any restriction the applicant considers necessary for safe operation of the aircraft
- Any other information considered necessary by the FAA for the purpose of prescribing operating limitations
The FAA may make, or require the applicant to make appropriate inspections or tests necessary for safety
