flight deck (steel-toed) safety boots, cranial impact helmet, protective goggles, leather gloves
what is a runway?
paved areas that are used for aircraft takeoff and landing. runways vary in length determined by aircraft size
what re threshold markings? what are their dimensions?
parallel stripes on the ends of the runways
stripes are 12 feet by 150 feet and designate the landing area
what is the overrun area?
paved/unpaved section on ends of runways that provide effective deceleration area for aborting/overshooting aircraft
what is an MA-1 series overrun barrier?
designed to stop tricycle landing gear equipped aircraft not equipped w/tail hooks. MA-1A is always in standby status in case there is an aborted takeoff or emergency overrun landing.
what is a taxiway?
paved areas for aircraft to move between parking aprons, runways and airfield services
what is a parking apron?
open paved areas adjacent to hangers. used for parking, servicing and loading aircraft. connected to the runways by taxiways.
what is a compass calibration pad (compass rose)?
paved area in a magnetically quiet area where aircraft compass is calibrated
what is the runway numbering system?
runways are normally numbered in relation to their magnetic heading rounded off to nearest 10 degrees
what is an airfield rotating beacon?
airport is below VFR weather conditions, day/night, rotating beacon is used to identify airports location
military airfield use 2 white lights and one green flashing 12 to 15 times per min
what is the required flight deck protective equipment?
flight deck (steel-toed) safety boots, protective jersey. cranial impact helmet, protective eye goggles, leather gloves
what are some life threatening hazards present during flight operations?
jet intakes & exhaust, rotor & propeller arcs
what is used to readily recognize personnel on the flight deck?
color coded classification system
