air volume and capacity Flashcards
Vt ?
Tidal volume
volume of air that moves in and out during normal quiet ventilation. around 500ml
nspiratory reserve volume (IRV)
amount of air that can be forcely inhaled after normal tidal volume. An extra 3 L can be inspired if the external intercostal muscles are assisted by the accessory muscles for a maximal inspiration (forced inspiration).
expiratory reserve volume (ERV)
An extra 1.5 L can be expelled if the internal intercostal and accessory muscles are contracted for a maximal expiration (forced expiration).
3
what is the residual volume
the volume of air remaining in the lungs after maximum forceful expiration. around 1L.
Vital capacity (VC)
5 L. Maximal breath in to maximal out (ERV + VT + IRV).
Total lung capacity (TLC)
6 L. If you breath all the way in you hold about 6 L in your lungs (VC + RV).
Inspiratory capacity (IC)
3.5 L. The total amount of air that can be drawn into the lungs after normal expiration (VT + IRV).
Functional residual capacity (FRC)
2.5 L. Volume in lungs at end of tidal expiration (RV + ERV).
