Air Traffic Control Flashcards
definition PF ATC Procedures
Procedures used by a pathfinder element to promote the safe and expeditious flow of air traffic in and around a Tactical Operation Site and prevent collisions.

Speak Directly into the Mic
Speak in a normal conversational tone
speak with confidence
Avoid a monotonous pitch
Avoid a too slow or too fast rate of speech
Avoid any display of emotion, nervousness, indecision or excitement
Examples of Pertinent Information for landing site
Signal on Call
Description of the Landing site
Conditions at the Landing Site
Field Elevation of the Landing Site (Night Ops only)
Examples of Advisory Information for landing site
Turbulence at or near the Site Obstacles/Hazards Artillery/Mortar Fire Enemy Situation Weather Other AC at or near the site
Pertinent Information
Information pertaining directly to your landing site
Advisory Information
information that the pilot must know in order to avoid a potentially hazardous situation
5 legs of a standard traffic pattern
Upwind Leg Crosswind Leg Downwind Leg Base Leg Final Approach Leg
Primary purpose of Traffic Pattern
To control AC around a landing site, and pick-up zone in order to ensure aircraft separation.
Characteristics of Traffic Pattern
Extends in all directions for a distance of 1 statute mile from the center line of the landing site. Altitude is METT-TC dependent
When can an AC be cleared for a straight in approach?
When the AC is within 30 degrees of the final approach leg
Minimum pattern that can be flown
Final Approach Leg
Description of a Left or Right Traffic Pattern
Left traffic pattern is all left turns
Right traffic pattern is all right turns
what is a Modified traffic pattern?
A traffic pattern consisting of either 2 or 3 legs
When can a Rotary wing AC enter the traffic pattern?
Anywhere as long as it safe
2 Primary Methods to create additional airspace between AC?
- The 360 degree turnout- given to slower AC, 2 minute turnout. Can do it on Final Approach.
- Extending 1 or more legs of the pattern. ( can’t extend base or final leg)
Most commonly encountered approach by PF?
circling approach
Closed traffic pattern use
two types left and right. AC continues to orbits at a specified altitude. Ex. DZ operations
6 priorities for landing AC at your site
AMCFAS Aircraft with an in-flight emergency MEDEVAC AC with ground MEDEVAC Coded AC (1-8) Flight of 2 or more AC AC with External Load Single AC
3 cardinal rules for arriving and departing AC
- Arriving AC will not be given clearance to land until all preceding AC have taxied or flown forward of landing point.
- Departing AC will not be cleared for departure until all AC have flown clear.
- Never allow a sling load AC to fly over personnel, equipment or another AC at any time.
