Aims and Hypothesis & Operationalization Flashcards
Define ‘aim’.
Stating the purpose of the research in a clear and precise way.
Define ‘hypothesis’.
A testable/ measurable statement of prediction.
What are the types of hypothesis?
Experimental/ alternative
Directional
Non directional
Non experimental
Define experimental/ alternative hypothesis.
Includes an independent and dependent variable.
Define non experimental hypothesis.
Reasearchers measure variables as they naturally occur there is no manipulation of variables.
No manipulation of the IV.
Define directional hypothesis.
Results can go in one specific direction/ prediction will go in one specific direction. ‘one tailed’.
Define non directional hypothesis.
Results can go in either direction- does not predict a specific direction. ‘two tailed’.
What is a null hypothesis?
- States that there is no significant relationship.
- One variable will have no effect on another.
- There is no significant difference between two sets of data.
What is operationalization?
A term used to describe how a variable is defined by a researcher and a way of measuring how that variable is developed for the research.
What are some examples of operationalizing variables?
DV: Aggression from children in a playground.
Operationalized variable: frequency of aggressive acts such as hitting or pushing others
