Q

Immune System

A

Security system- if something gets in it gets identified and destroyed

  • allergies
  • infection
  • cancer
  • autoimmune disorders

Q

Natural Immunity

A
  • Fast and broad
  • General attackers
Granulocytes: largest groups of cells. Includes neutrophils and macrophages. Which are the first to arrive on the site

-Macrophages: release cytokines that lead to inflammation, fever and promote wound healing

A
  • Recognize cancer and viral infections

- Creating an alarm system

Q

Specific Immunity

A
  • Slow but specific

- Lymphocytes- specific receptor for specific pathogen/antigen

Q

Hum moral Immunity

A
  • Mediated by B (bacteria) lymphocytes
  • protection against bacteria and neutralize toxins they produce
  • prevent viral infections

Q

Cell-Mediated Immunity

A

Cytotoxic TC cells response to specific antigens

  • Helper T(TH) cells enhance functioning of the Tc, B cells and macrophages
  • If your helper cells aren’t working thats really bad. If other cells aren’t working, not as big of a deal

Q

Immunocompetence * know this

A

Immune functioning can be assessed by- count of lymphocytes in blood (also T,B,NK cells)

  • Assessing the functioning of the cells
  • Activation
  • Proliferation
  • Transformation
  • Cytotoxicity of cells

Q

Immunocompetence Summing it up

A

Viral/bacteria comes into our body to build their family

  • Our body creates antibodies to fight and keep memory of them- why you only get chicken pox once
  • dead virus/flu shot- if your body doesn’t response or you get sick this isnt good
  • we want to see immune response and not get sick from dead virus
  • wound repair also a sign if your immune system is working

Q

Short vs Long Term Stressors

A

Short Term Stressors:

  • fight/flight
  • increase NK cells and granular lymphocytes

Long Term Stressors:

  • cellular and humeral down regulation
  • strong among elderly

Down Regulation
Intense –> Acute –> Chronic
- This is hard on your body

Q

Stress and Immune Function

A

Pro inflammatory cytokine: lead to inflammation

  • Decrease in TH helper cells with anticipatory stress- compromises immune functioning
  • Effects of stress on immune system can be DELAYED. Exams
    • Overal idea: stress lowers immune functioning and increases inflammation
  • Depression- not good
  • Social support: increases NK cell activity-good

Q

AIDS

A

“acquired immune deficiency syndrome”
- spread through world travel
- low condom use
- non sterile techniques through drug users AND 3rd world countries
- Decrease in new infections among adults and children
HIV= the virus, you’re the carrier. Doesn’t mean you have AIDS but its dormant in your system

Q

AIDS Mechanism

A

HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)

  • Attacks helper T cells and macrophages
  • time between HIV -AIDS is variable
  • lack of symptoms but still contagious

Q

AIDS Therapy ** know this

A

HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapy)

  • needs to be taken the same time every day religiously
  • SES and housing can correlate with how well you do with this treatment

Q

AIDS population

A

Homosexual men- less monogamous, more blood - exchange during sex
Drug users
-Aboriginal and minority at risk
- adolescent and young adults most at risk **

17
Q

AIDS- psychosocial and interventions

A
  • Large group is HIV positive
  • Can be put in jail if you dont tell someone
  • Isolatiing- mood, depression- further of disease

Interventions:

  • condoms, safe needles
  • Sexual negotiation in adolescents
  • Culturally sensitive interventions **
18
Q

Cancer

A
  • Result from dysfunction in DNA
  • Rapid cell growth and proliferation
    Increase in: thyroid and liver
    Decrease: breast,lung,cervical,prostate

Links:

  • genetics
  • diet
  • lifestyle factors

Psychosocial:

  • depression puts you at higher risk for developing cancer. Not causing it
  • lowering efficacy of NK cells
19
Q

Arthritis

A
  • most prevalent autoimmune disease (immune system is attacking your body)
  • chronic progressive disease that is debilitating
  • inflammation of a joint
    2/3 women
    3/5 under 65
20
Q

Rheumatoid Arthritis

A

3x more common in women
25-50 primary targets
- small joints- hands, feet,wrists,neck- thin membranes
Leads to: inflammation, stiffness and pain
- CBT useful in managing
- can lead to depression and pain management
- Exercise is essential

21
Q

Osteoarthritis

A
  • Gender equally effected
  • onset usually after 45
  • Body starts to attack the cartilage that leads to bone on bone
