a formal relationship between elements whereby a form of one word requires a corresponding form of another
TARGET
element that changes
CONTROLLER
element that determines the change
FEATURES
characteristic of the controller along which the target varies
VERB AGREEMENT
in person, number, gender;
with subject, direct objects, indirect objects;
forms: affixes, suppletion, clitics
(not always obligatory) + different possibilities
AGREEMENT + BWO
richer in V-initial languages, because it give as much grammatical information as early as possible
AGREEMENT + CASE
verbs more likely to agree with arguments than with adjuncts, often verb and case interact
AGREEMENT NP
in number, gender and/or case
a modifier can agree with its head noun: demonstratives, articles, adjectives, numerals, but a possessed head noun can also agree with its possessor
AGREEMENT WITH POSSESSOR
alienable vs inalienable possession
