What are some common changes to the body with age?
Decreased lens elasticity causing presbyopia, elastin/collagen changes, menopause, reduced ADH responsiveness, hearing decline, appetite change, muscle wasting/weakness
Why does sexual responsiveness decline with age in females?
reduced orgasm intesity, decreases stimulation reponse, decreased vaginal lubrication, endocrine changes
Why does sexual responsiveness decline with age in males?
decreased sex drive, errectile changes, longer refractory period, endocrine changes
What are the risk factors for falls?
age, previous fall, polypharmacy (>4 drugs), impaired cognition, poor vision, muscle weakness, joint pain
What are some ways to decrease the risk of falls?
Walking regularlry, muscle strengthening with physio, wearing glasses, home assessment and aids
What is menopause?
The final cessation of menstruation
What is perimenopause?
The years surrounding menopause, when symptoms usually occur
What are the signs/symptoms of menopause?
Night sweats, hot flushes, palpitations, mood change, joint pain, vaginal dryness, osteoporosis
What are the pharmacoligical treatments for menopausa?
Oestrogen creams, HRT (oestrogen & progesterone, with IUD+oestrogen pills, or combined oestrogen/progesterone pills)
What are the risks of taking HRT for menopause?
Increased risk of: breast/endometrial cancer, cardiovascular disease, DVT/PE
