Aggression Flashcards
(10 cards)
Aggression
Behaviour with the intention to harm
Instinct theory of aggression
-Aggression is instinctive and thus, a natural response
-The release of aggression is called catharsis
Instinct theory of aggression evaluation
+Aggression is a natural instinct
+Catharsis is proven to work
-Aggression is often learnt
-Too simplistic
Frustration aggression theory
-Frustration results after you are blocked from reaching your goal
-If frustration is punished, it leads to more aggression
Frustration aggression theory evaluation
+More realistic than instinct theory
+Fustration and aggression are linked
-Aggression can occur without frustration being present
-Doesn’t take born with aggressive traits into account
Aggressive cue hypothesis
-Environmental cue increases arousal, which creates aggression if there’s an aggressive cue
-A certain stimuli must be presented that acts as a cue for aggression
Aggressive cue hypothesis evaluation
+Cues often trigger aggression
+
-Cues don’t always lead to aggression
-Doesn’t consider cognition
Social learning theory for aggression
-Aggression is learned
-Learned through significant others through modelling & reinforcement
Social learning theory for aggression evaluation
+Explains why people react differently
+Considers the role of others in the development of aggression
-Ignores traits in aggression
-Ignores how cues lead to aggression
Fustration-aggression hypothesis
-Goal getting blocked by an obstacle always leads to frustration
-That frustration always leads to aggression
-If the aggression is successful (helps them to achieve the goal), it leads to catharsis, and fustration is loss
-If the aggression leads to punishment, then they return to frustration
