WHAT IS AGGRESSION
defined as behaviour that is intended to cause psychological or physical injury
4 TYPES OF AGGRESSION
- Hostile
- Instrumental
- Relational
- Institutional
HOSTIILE AGGRESSION
Behaviour done to relieve frustration and anger
- typically sudden anger
- can come with increased, blood pressure
(e.g getting back at a bully)
INSTRUMENTAL AGGRESSION
cold and calculating behaviour that often leads to personal reward
- can be intrinsic or extrinsic
(e.g bullying, serial killer)
RELATIONAL AGGRESSION
Involves damaging relationships ( can be combination of hostile and instrumental aggression.
(e.g. domestic abuse)
INSTITUTONAL AGGRESSION
aggressive behaviour adopted by members of an institution e.g post code gangs

- Operant conitioning
- Social learning theory
AGGRESSION REWARDS
- Social status rewards e.g. respect, praise
- Tangible rewards e.g money, sex
CUTURAL NORMS
cultures differ in levels of aggression and violent crimes . e.g Mexico 8.1 per 100,000 for homicide
EAGLY AND WOOD (1991)
argues that norms dictate the behaviour expected from men and women
