Hostile (inflicting mental or psychological pain on someone is the main goal), Instrumental (inflicting pain on someone else is a means to an end)

Does social exclusion lead to aggression? Evidence?
Participants entered lab, chat with 4-5 people and choose 2 to work with, no one chose you (or everyone chooses you), then deliver white noise to stranger.
Results: excluded = louder longer white noise bursts to a stranger (not who excluded)
Does exposure to aggressive objects lead to aggression? Evidence?
participants made angry in presence of gun & racket, then opportunity to administer shocks to fellow student
Result: angry participants gave longer shocks when gun was present in a room
What is the frustration-aggression hypothesis? Evidence?
frustration leads to aggression, goal blockage leads to frustration
confederate cuts in 2nd in line and 12th in line, people more aggressive when cut in 2nd
What strategies reduce aggression?
non-aggressive role models, defuse through apology, empathy (putting yourself in someones shoes)
